The Beginning

Welcome to Intersections. The official online home for anything and everything having to do with the new Honda CR-Z, at least for the next nine months or so. The CR-Z sport hybrid will make its global debut in a few hours, here at NAIAS (more casually known as, the Detroit Auto Show). We’ve been teasing you with CR-Z concepts for quite some time now. But the version being revealed today is the actual North American model—what the industry calls “the production version”. It’s finally time for the real CR-Z to meet the real world.
The CR-Z’s arrival is significant simply because there’s no other vehicle out there like it. It’s a hybrid that doesn’t drive or look like a typical hybrid. We can’t wait to share more details and get more in-depth in the coming weeks and months on this site.
For now, we want to welcome you to the page and encourage you to visit often. And participate. True, this is an opportunity for us to share information with you about the CR-Z, but we also want it to be a forum for you to share your thoughts with us. The plan is to populate the site with some unique content you won’t be able to get anywhere else — guest writers, open forum discussions, games, access to the design team and more.
Look for our next post later today, from the floor of the Detroit Auto Show. Complete with footage and photos of the new CR-Z sport hybrid.

CR-Z Home

Honda, are you paying any attention–a lot of people are saying what should have been obvious to you. The biggest problem with this car is that you made it a hybrid. If it had to be a hybrid (although I personally remain unconvinced that hybrid systems benefits outweigh the costs) it needed a much more powerful engine, as 122 hp is sadly lacking).
Given the poor performance numbers for this car, do you really expect people to buy this just because its hybrid?
If that were the case, the new Insight would be a huge sales success.
I WANT MY CRX!!!!!!!!!!!!! loved that car and wished that I had never sold it (86 CRX-SI). Love my kids, but wished that I would have bought another car to haul them, but instead I replaced my beloved CRX for more seats at the time (1992 when sold). I bought another 87 Crx-SI a few months ago, guess what, one of my boys (the reason I sold the first CRX) drove it and wrecked it. I only had the car in my possesion for 18 days and got to drive it 5 times before that. Now looking for another 1987 CRX-SI to either fix or replace my “slightly used” joy to drive. Please Honda take heed and listen to the masses…….we love our CRX…………bring it back in true form. An absolute thrill to drive, own, and still turns heads on the road today. CRX fans will always yearn for the return of a flash from the past. Just as good today as 20+ years ago. Again loved my “POCKET ROCKET”, bring it back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honda better put a 200hp Si engine in this car. Sport and Hybrid should not go together.
I too was looking forward to the CR-Z, I was hoping the CRV-HF would make a comeback. I remember the original 88-89 had 53-58 mpg estimates, and our 88 Honda Accord achived 36 mpg on the open road regularly at 55-60mph, and 32mpg at 75 mph. I realize the change in the EPA estimates and testing has changed, as well as the National speed limit. But come on, I expect improvement over 20 years in efficency not stagnation, and reversal. the CR-Z should be able to achive at least 45 mpg at 75 mph today.
Strike one Honda, do a better job. I know you can do better!
i’ve wanted a crx my whole life! in fact, if i win the lotto, a killer crx will be in my dream garage, next to the exotics. just sold my beloved 96 civic hx w/ 180k miles and drive my g35 daily now. even though the g35 is a blast, it’s too heavy to flick around, and i def miss the mpg from the hx.
HONDA please give me a lighter car than this 2700 lb sumo 2 seater, and the mpg will naturally increase. what’s the use of jumping on the bandwagon of hybrids if it doesn’t even deliver any significant increase in mpg?? please offer a non hybrid version as well, as i m sure to customize it.
i’m gonna like the cr-z from what i’ve read and seen so far, but i’m sure to love it if ur gonna be like burger king and make it my way!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE hurry up and fail miserably CRZ. . . so that Honda can wake up and bring a real sports car back into the line. . . and not this unattractive pseudo-electric wind up toy.
I like the looks of it, I currently own a 2010 Subaru Impreza Hatchback and really have come to like the hatchback styling. I would be willing to consider this vehicle but I am concerned about the power to weight ratio. It seems like you would have been better off with the 1.8 Liter from the Civic and even that engine had to work at times. Also the suspension needs to be retuned, I would blame the setup for the demise of my 2007 Civic which suffered a double blowout and ended up rolling. Every time you hit a bump in one of these cars you wonder which end is going to come ahead first. Road noise is also unforgivable. If I am going to be taking this car on extended road trips I don’t want to have to raise my voice to hold a conversation. The blue lighting on dashboard is a terrible thing as well, the glare at night gives me a headache, there is a reason the germans incorporated red instruments. The seats in my Civic were fine for a few hours but after a bit my back and legs would hurt, I have this problem in some vehicles, not all. I will say this, when I would come to a twisty mountain road I was always smiling, I loved chunking my car into the corners. I would say with the CRX you have a great concept but it has a ways to go before it can compete with other hot hatches on the road. I will certainly give it a try and go test drive one.
Another disappointing hybrid from Honda. As the purchaser of a 2004 HCH, I can attest to the fact that the Honda CVT leaves a great deal to be desired. Even driven gently a standard gas model CRX or a Civic DX gets better fuel economy for a whole lot less.
I get comparable highway fuel economy from my 2005 Accord with room for five.
Honda should stick to its knitting and build a high mileage gasoline or turbo diesel two seater and everybody will be happy – who knows they might even sell some
I have owned several Hondas as well. I currently have an 07′ Civic and a 00′ S2000.
Was really looking forward to a CR-Z with performance to match at least the Civic Si.
I must say there is great disappointment in what I am reading about the spec’s. If you wanted to make another insight then there really is no point in makeing this car. If it had around 200 hp then I would be very interested in this car but at this point no way. The Mazda3speed is looking better everyday as a replacement for the 07 Civic I currently have. Good power, good handling, not crazy about the grill but I can deal with it and the interior is much more sporty than this CR-z. This should have been a car that was a sporty (no true sports car drives the front wheels) car first, light, simple interior good power to weight, that was all left out just to add the word hybred to the name. The concept car was great looking, the production model is just a plain car trying to cash in on the hybred fade.
I too was an owner of the old CRX-SI, incredible car, super fast (pocket-rocket), super sports look, small, super responsive and the gas mileage on this car was incredbile. Truly a car if your mostly the only driver in the car like to….(to and from work) plus tooling around on the weekends.
My first question on this new Honda CRZ is price, bottom line what is the price $$$$$. knowing Honda, simply because its as they put it….”Hybrid” the probably will jack up the price $$$ like 5-10k simply for being Hybrid. If this happens…………..sales will be minimal and most will turn away. I purchased my CRX-SI for under $4500.00 used. It only had like 22k miles on it.
These Car makers don’t seem to get it at all. We ARE in a Global Economic Resession, Unemployment at an all time high with many out of work = no $$$$, the largest home foreclosures in history and from the latest news gettting worse and worse. American car industry going under, why? for all these very reasons, plus american quality is at an ALL time WORSE.
Bottom line is consumers want and look first and foremost…………PRICE. How much $$$$, quality and reliability. We love Honda for its realibilty, we love Honda for its quality, yet do we love Honda for its prices???? We used to, I purchased a brand new Honda Accord DX 2000 in Bethesda Maryland during the winter for a blow out special promotion……….$12999.00. With all taxes the out of the door purchase was less than 15k out the door. This is what consumers want. Give us the best bottom base price (without all the bells and whistles).
India is producing the new TATA for less than $2500.00. Correct a nice small car under $2500.00. This car is coming into America soon, they have it right, thinking right and doing it right. Next thing you know this car will be a HUGE hit all over the world/globe.
So my answer to ALL car makers including Honda for this CRZ. Please make the car under 15k or less, you WILL have double if not triple if not quadrupile sales. Yet I know deep in my heart for all the hype of this hybrid they will ask a for a ridiculous overpriced cost and in the end………Honda will loose with little sales.
Consumers are sick and tired of paying 20+k, 30+k if not more for cars. In Latin American/Asian countires you can purchase an entirely brand NEW residential home at these prices. Honda are you listening?????? I too love the old CRX’s and will pay cash for a brand spanking new affordable econmical price. Give me a Japaneese new car under $10k and you will have a sale, many sales, thousands of sales. I too hope this car will be around 10k or at the most 15k. Any price more than this…………and next, start looking at others. Get it right this time!
looks ok but 122 HP with 2700 lbs ?
what you want race with it ? 1991 nissan sentra with 1.6L ? maybe…
because 1991 SE-R will eat that thing on breakfast
this car needs at least 150 HP or it will be just a big waste
i guarantee nobody going to buy ,maybe just flower power etc.
Loved the CR-X, CR-Z seems heavy, why do u need a hybrid system for 33 mpg? Weighs more, costs more, less power? Inside should be typical honda plain/sport not crazy about blue neon. Love the outside design and the 6 speed manual tranny. si model is absolute must. this car should cost the same as a civic, the hybrid will probabley make it over $20k easy with taxes. Really wanted to like this car, I don’t know who is gonna buy a sport car with a hybrid tag on the back? civic si weighs same, costs same, gets 33mpg and is 200hp gas only motor. I would offer more engine options and maybe sell a few. Not knocking the car, being a honda i’m sure it will be good as is, however, it would be much more appealing with gas only motor. I don’t wanna have to think about paying $5k when an advanced battery dies on me.
I was waiting for this car since 2007!! They watered it down so much it was pathetic, I ended buying an EVO 10 last month. And I have owned 3 Honda cars in 4 years and was a true fan, WAS.
Thank you Honda …It’s about time!”
I too had a 1989 CRX Si, great car. This new CR-Z is not very impressive to me. Honda, Nissans and Toyotas of the 80’s were reaching 50mpg (remember the CRX-HF), so what is so impressive with these new hi-eff. new cars…nothing. Oh wait, you can change to color of the lighting for the dash, or the spaceship like dash, or an MP3 player, but nothing of any substance.
i like the angle of the windsheild and the forward profile it looks a little like a car I helped to design but it looks as though the bosses cut off something from the back end. give it a v6 bigger tires an do a little more with the rearend and rear wheel drive, froget gas mpg and I be willing to bet you would sell a MILLION .
I do not know much about cars. But i think that Honda should get rid of “HYBRID” and make a real sports car. One with at least 350HP Stock. I am tired of hearing about Hybrids and MPGs. Honda is know for long lasting cars and durable too. But will it kill you to make a light weight coupe with a nice V6 or V8??
Or a Car that looks like the CRZ with a turbo charged V6? Sure you can make the Car bigger but just for the engine space!! Also this car is heavy i am sure that Honda can make it lighter..
I want something Small and Fast… Very Fast
I also want something that last.
I fell in love with the 1st Gen in 1986 – and it took me 5 years to get my used 86 Si, with 83K miles on it. Now, after 18 years, 200K miles, and a painful engine rebuild, it is still my daily driver. The only thing I would ever replace it with MIGHT be this CR-Z. Looking forward to seeing pricing and options…
Its pretty clear by reading these reviews theres three kinds of people.
The non boy racer that wants a 50 mpg hybrid.
The boy racer who wants the 33ish mpg 2.0 liter v-tech,
and everyone else who wants basically what you’ve got but with no hybrid, they want the 1.6 liter v-tech you put in the fit that gets around 35-40 mpg with decent performance.
people want simple interiors, low weight, low cost and decent performance just like the 90’s crx. I will never pay over $20k for a cr-z… well maybe an si version.
You’re not listening honda… green does not always = hybrid
Please show me one person who want a sporty car with a hybrid logo plastered on the bumber.. not me… not most of the people reviewing this..
It’s called options, you either have them or it’s a flop. theres three groups of people listed above that this car could and would and should appeal too. right now you’re not appealing to any of them. BTW I love Honda, I love the CR-X and I really.. really want to love the new CR-Z but right now I don’t at all.. Please take these into consideration so you can sell millions of them instead of dozens..
I like the front of it, but the back looks terrible(like a typical hybird).
The mpg isn’t WOW.
Heavy, but I know the hybrid battery weights it down a bit
Sporty cars have dominate fronts and less noticeable rears, you however did the exact opposite. I would probably buy one if you cosmetically fix the rear.
Its funny to read all these comments about how their X gets XX gas mileage…Point blank..your 1800 80’s beater would crumple like a coke can if subjected to the 2010 federal crash standards…time marches on…comparing a modern apple to a creaky old rasin isnt really saying much.
YOUR car would fail 2010+ standards…the CRZ passes with flying colors…why…design. Now the powerplant…its more powerful and mroe efficient than any of the 80’s era motors Honda put out…look at its carbon footprint…oh you forgot about that too didnt you? The UK market measures CO2 production…your 80’s ear buckets would fail again.
I owned 9 Hondas and havent always enjoyed their decisions but wake up and realize their are larger forces at work here.
Price – find a cheaper hybrid with more features..not gonna happen
Sport – find another manual trans hybrid – not gonna happen
Handling – find a better handling hybrid – not gonna happen
Looks – this kicks the crap out of all the shoeboxes on wheels on the market hands down
So when you consder this is a cost effective hybrid car with low CO2 output, that is safe TODAY and less expensive than the competition there isnt much to gripe about if your a hybrid shopper – for the rest….there are plenty of 1988-2000 Civics, CRXs, Integras to build for less money with better handling, more power and better looks…but will not be nearly as safe or eco friendly.
If you wanna drive a Prius shoebox..be my guest…Id rather be in the sporty, manual trans, sleek looking CRZ thats less money and begging for a K series motor.
this reminds me of how stupid i was to give up my 1990 CRX. it had over 300k miles and it only needed a few thousand dollars worth of work on the motor, brakes, and body to get it back into showroom condition. and it was the perfect size for commuting in southern california and i still averaged over 35mpg on the freeway before parting with it. it’s hard to find a stock CRX out there as just about all the kids modify their CRX’s.
Next to the Cadillac CTS Coupe, this is the best looking car at the show. And I’m delighted that this is a hatchback.
I really like the concept of the CRZ and am eager to give it a test run when it hits the US.
** If the aim is to target a younger population, I would strongly suggest selling the 4-seat version in the US. I believe that not many people would give up two seats for the sake of storage space, which would kill sales for a two-seat vehicle. And, I know that I would not buy a CRZ if such was the case.
this car looks awesome, really sporty, but it only will come in a 1.5L. that runes the fun. they should atleast put a 2.0 in. srew economy mode i wana go fast
I have always been a Honda/Acura owner and love the level of quality and reliability that Honda has always represented but I have to say that I don’t agree with the current direction in styling with either brand. My prediction is that if both Ford and GM get their act together Honda and Toyota will begin to lose market share due to the better styling I have been seeing lately. Oh yeah, BTW, this new CRZ is way ugly and doesn’t even come close to the new Ford Focus’ styling.
Honda,… please, Please, PLEASE, come out with sexier looking cars before it’s too late.
Guess I’ll be sticking with my 1st Gen RSX-S for a while longer. Snore. C’mon Honda give us something with some heart and passion. This is limp. 60 and still like to work it through the corners… Pleez!
Its the ugliest honda i ever saw, really !!!! plus the MPG sucks !!!!, you can add this to the top 10 most ugliest car , remember the Pontiac Aztec ,?
Honda , Please get your acts together …………
WOW. They just HAD to put that old Insight BUTT on the thing along with the ho-hum factors like weight and outrageous price. Considering the cost of INEVITABLE battery replacement down the line I’m betting it won’t hold value like a plain old CRX or even a common Civic
I’ll bet we’ll see a lot of these parked in front of the BLUE OYSTER BAR.
Maybe if they offer it ONLY in green. There are a lot of stupid people that buy “green” things and think that the word “hybrid” elevates their status quo.
My first car was a 1975 Civic CVCC. I’m a true honda fanatic.
I was really hoping that the CR-Z would be the sporty two seat replacement to my wifes RSX. I love my Civic Si sedan but I’d like something smaller with a simlar sportiness. I’m willing to spend ~26K but only if I get what I want. The CR-Z is clearly not what I had hoped. I might do the unthinkable and consider a Mazda 3 or Kia Forte Koup as the replacement for the RSX.
I really wish the leadership at Honda would listen to the customers that want to buy another great Honda.
I’d like to make a second comment.
There is one thing that will still get me into the dealerships when the CR-Z hits. I’m willing to bet there will be a larger-than-average amount of CRX trade-ins during the first few months of the CRZ, and you can bet I’ll be right there in the used car manager’s ear. Count on it.
If this car survives 3 years it will be rebadged as an Insight trimline (Insight CR-Z). But it won’t survive.
Nobody is going to buy this car, and especially not me. Nobody that wants a new CRX will buy it, it doesn’t have what the CRX had – inexpensive sportiness (cheap fun – it has niether). Nobody that wants a mpg-commuter will buy it, for so many reasons (2 seats, bad mpg, expensive). Who are they trying to sell this car too? I can’t believe I actually held off buying a new car because I heard they were bringing the CRX back.
I’ve owned one 86 CRX, and four 2ndGen CRX’s. In all honesty, I would buy a fresh-off-the-assembly-line 1991 CRX Si with a stick, a sunroof, alloys, and no A/C for $15k of today’s money (and I’d be a fool) before I’d spend a dime on this CR-Z – which looks like it will probably cost $25k+.
What a massive disappointment, but thankfully, they didn’t name it CRX. I think they didn’t call it the CRX because they KNEW it wasn’t going to be worthy. There’s still a chance for a CRX revival.
Honda are you listening?
PS Gimme back my S2000 too
I was so excited to get this car out of college, but I simply do not see the point. At the same pricepoint I can get a genesis coupe which is much faster and is rwd. I guess what is making me so upset with honda lately is the fact that you refuse to implement direct injection. While it may not be necessary in all of you cars, it shoud, without question, at least be in the hybrids. I mean really…throwing away 15% gains in efficency so you have to add a 300lb battery pack?? to make up for technology that is really not that new at this point. I love hondas, but I feel as if you are heading quickly in the wrong direction.
BRING BACK THE OLD BODY STYLE AND YOU’LL HAVE KIDS BUYING HONDA AGAIN LEFT AND RIGHT. IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT…………..IT’S A HONDA
LOYAL HONDA CIVIC OWNER
